INTRO TO CAMP

Why Summer Camp in the USA?
Each and every summer more than 8 million American children pack their bags and head off to summer camp – it’s a century-old tradition that’s as deep-rooted in America as Baseball, Chevrolet and the Big Mac! Days at camp are spent doing favourite activities, hanging with friends and counsellors from across the globe, and generally having a blast! Memories are made that last a lifetime!
Thousands of camps operate each summer (remember that’s June-September) to provide every camper with a safe, fun and nurturing environment where they are free to be themselves no matter their social backgrounds, religious faith or physical abilities. Camps are located in beautiful, rural settings across North America. Most are located near lakes or rivers, have extensive open land, sports fields, and areas for activities such as swimming, rock climbing, water skiing, arts and crafts, performing arts, dance, gymnastics and soccer, to name but a few! In fact, if you can think of an activity its probably offered at a summer camp somewhere! Each camp is unique, but they all have one common goal and that is to give each camper a summer they’ll never forget!
Along with the 8 million children attending summer camp, are another 18,000 international counselors from across the globe. Heading to a US summer camp has become an increasingly popular option for young South Africans that want to leave behind the winter months and head for their own ‘Adventure of a life time’ working at camp. If you are aged between 18-30, have a sense of adventure and like children, or are just a big kid yourself, you could do it too!
A summer at camp will be both the hardest job you’ve ever done AND the most rewarding. It can be tough at times as you spend 24 hours a day with children, living and sleeping in the same cabins with them, as well as working and playing with them. If you are the right person for camp though, in many ways it will also be the easiest, as there cannot be a more exciting, fun, or energetic environment to live and work in.
As a counselor at camp you will wear many ‘hats’! You will be a role model, leader, and friend, as well as a big brother or sister, teacher or coach and possibly a little bit of a parent too! You will certainly learn new skills, meet people from right across the globe, and also have the chance to travel around the USA once you’ve finished working at camp. This is a great time to relax with new found friends and head to the places you’ve only dreamt about. How about heading to Disneyland, to Las Vegas, the beaches of California, or shopping in Manhattan.
Many people have such a great time at camp they return for a second summer and travels to new adventures. So, be WARNED – it’s addictive!
Work Hard – Play Harder!
