THIS ONE TIME……

When they say it will be the ‘Best Summer of your Life’ believe me they’re not joking! After finishing school I wanted to go overseas. The thought of being able to avoid an SA winter, and instead, teach arts and crafts, work with kids, and get paid for it was too hard to resist. I went along to a Chilli Adventures information meeting, applied online and got placed at an awesome camp in North Carolina named Camp Seafarer. It was a huge YMCA camp with great facilities and fantastic people. The campers were so great and I made so many friends that I got to go travelling all around the U.S. and visit them in their homes after camp. The whole experience was so rewarding I had to return and do it again for a second summer. If there were one piece of advice I could give anyone, it would be to stop simply dreaming about this, and apply now to go have the most incredible experience ever. It’s easier than you think. You will have no regrets!"

The word 'awesome' would be an understatement in describing my experience dealing with the Chilli Adventures team and my time working at Camp Wonderland (Girl Scout camp). My camp was set in rustic surroundings of Wisconsin. As a general counsellor, my role at camp involved assisting in the instruction of archery, swimming and horse riding to girls aged 8 - 17 years old. For 10 exciting weeks I called a platform tent, which I shared with 3 other counsellors, my home. Cooking outdoors, laughing with campers and singing camp songs became a way of life. Being a Camp Counsellor was hard work yet the rewards and memories I have gained from such an amazing experience I am sure will remain with me forever."

“The Best Summer of Your life?” I don’t agree. Let’s try the “Best Time in your ENTIRE Life”. I went to summer camp in New York State and experienced life with the best bunch of American kids and counsellors you could ever find. My best friends now live all round the world as I worked with some fantastic international staff. My co-counsellors were from Australia and Scotland. The kids were so fantastic, challenging, insightful and always interested in what I had to offer them. South Africans were really popular at my camp and this made the whole summer camp experience even more enjoyable. There are long days and hard work, but with these surroundings, it never felt like work to me!! It was truly the best time of my life…and after camp I had the best holiday of my life.

"I went to Camp Hope/Joy in Carmel, New York, a camp for disabled children and adults. The most challenging but best 3 months of my life. My brother Simon went to camp near Albany, also in New York; he had a great time too but has to save up again this year like me. Chilli Adventures is a wonderful organization who has made it easy for me to get to America over the past 3 years!!! I would recommend them to anyone who is hoping to work in a summer camp. The team are just great, and SOO friendly. They were always happy to answer any questions I had whether they were stupid or not. And my mum was constantly on the phone bugging them too. That’s for taking care of everything so well. You guys are ‘HOT”!
