OK!! So you’ve decided that camp is PERFECT for you. But you’re worried that you don’t have the necessary skills to get placed! Not to worry, Chilli is here to help!
Chilli Adventures work with some great organizations and training centers across South Africa to offer a selection of courses leading to top qualifications, some great experience and a lot of fun getting there! Below is just a taster… if you are interested in any of these courses please contact your local Chilli office for prices and dates of availability.
Sailing
Dont know your starboard side from your port side, or your mizzen mast from your bulk head?! Get up to date with all the sailing jargon and learn the basics of wind direction, safety, rigging and how to teach sailing to others. An exciting and invaluable course if you’re looking to work on the waterfront at camp. No prior experience is necessary.
Lifeguard
Fancy sitting on the beach catching a tan, and getting paid while doing it? Ok, so there’s a bit more involved, but take it from us, being a lifeguard at camp is one of the best jobs you can imagine! For consistency and insurance purposes, not all camps recognize the standard Surf Lifesaving certificate in South Africa, however this qualification is actually at a higher level than the US equivalent! Ace this, and you’ll be sure to get placed on the waterfront at camp. Course includeds, Level 1 & 2 first responders, first aid specific to water based injuries, theory of water safety and risk management, communication signals used in lifesaving, water rescue techniques, spinal board. To qualify you must be able to swim 400 meters in under 8 minutes.
Rock Climbing
If you have a head for heights then perhaps a course in climbing is for you! Learn what bouldering, knots, Caribeaner's and belay devices are all about! This course is designed to introduce the individual to the basics skills needed for Top Rope climbing. The following skills will be obtained: Equipment knowledge (harness, shoes and belay devices), Safety checks between climbing partners. Learning the follow through figure eight knot, Belaying skills (the management of the rope for your climbing partner and the prevention of injuries should the climber fall), Climbing communication and terminology,
Duration one 2 hour session (plus belay test) - No prior experience is necessary.
Horseback Riding / Equestrian Care
Would you consider yourself a horsey person? Learn to ride like the wind, and teach others to do the same. This course teaches you all the basics you need to know: Saddling and un-saddling a horse, how to put on, adjust and take off a bridle and bit, grooming and hoof care, Riding technique and instruction on how to teach riding technique.
Duration 1 week - No prior experience necessary.
Intro to Watersports
Are you a waterbaby? This course is a brilliantly fun way to get a taster of a range of different watersports as well as the instruction on how to teach these to others. Watersports include, waterskiing / wakeboarding, rubber duck (tender) driving, jet skiing, canoeing and more.
Everyone welcome, from novice to experienced. No matter what your level of ability, you’ll have a brilliant time and come away with some great teaching skills.
First Aid
This has to be one of the fundamental skills EVERYONE should have. Learn what to do in an emergency including trauma care, CPR and more.

SA QUALIFICATIONS DO NOT ALWAYS TRANSLATE FOR A US CAMP BUT THEY WILL CERTAINLY PROVIDE YOU WITH A GREAT SKILL LEVEL AND INSIGHT AS TO HOW THAT SKILL CAN BE TAUGHT. IT WILL BE UP TO THE PARTICIPANT ONCE AT CAMP TO DEMONSTRATE HIS/ HER SKILLS TO THE CAMP DIRECTOR
