BUDGETING
When you add up all the costs, there’s a lot to consider. Most peoples first question is ‘Will I make enough money to at least cover my upfront costs’ (flights, program fees etc). Ultimately, what you make will be up to you, and more specifically, will relate to how much you work.
Of the students polled this past season, most covered their costs in the first 4-6 weeks of working. Extremes at either end of the spectrum however saw students returning having only covered half their upfront costs (but having travelled, shopped and partied!), as well as students returning having covered all upfront costs and with a profit of R70,000 (but having worked 4 jobs and spent very little).
So, think about what the goals are for your trip (to travel, to gain work experience, to party, to make money etc), then take a look through the average costings below and do the maths yourself. We’ll chat more about this at your G.A.C session.
US Salary ($)
Most people work one full time position (40 hours a week) and then try to pick up a second position that allows for tips.
Hourly wage will depend on the employer and region in the US. Range is typically $8-12 per hour (many jobs also provide bonuses and tips). Tipped positions usually pay minimum wage (approx $5.50) but you’ll make tips on top. Tips are typically paid at 15-20% of bills (plus other positions) and so make up a considerable portion of your total wage.
Working at a resort allows you employee perks like free ski passes and staff discounts saving you some serious money on food, equipment, and resort facilities etc.
Expenses to consider:
Housing/Rent costs from $250–$600/month
Food from $100–$250/month
Transportation from $0–$60/month
Housing Deposits (this can be as much as two months rent)
